Peter and the Wolf
Year Level Duration
Foundation 45mins
Rationale
Students will be introduced to a classical piece of music, Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev. This activity encourages children to explore how different music can express feelings and emotions.

At Foundation Level, students “make performing and visual arts works that express and communicate experiences, observations, ideas and feelings about
themselves and their world”(VCAA, 2013). They respond to stimuli from sources such as play, problem solving, imagination and observation, and with guidance they make arts works.
AusVELS recognises that the arts "fuel the exploration of ideas that cross the gamut of human emotions and moods through holistic learning using cognitive, emotional, sensory, aesthetic, kinaesthetic and physical fields" (VCAA, 2013).

Introduction to lesson
- Have the class sitting on the mat ready for a discussion
- Ask the students 'what different feelings do you have when you listen to music?'
- Discuss with the class how we can feel many emotions when we listen to music
- What does happy music sounds like?
- What does sad music sounds like?
- What does scary music sound like?
Main component of lesson
Watch the first part of the Peter & the Wolf video (up to 3:10mins) which includes the introduction of the story and the characters with their matching
instruments. Stop the video after 3mins.
Go through each instrument with the class using the Peter and the Wolf PowerPoint. If possible, show the actual instrument to the class and demonstrate the sound it makes. Discuss with the class the types of sound each instrument makes and the animal that it matches to in Peter and the Wolf.
As you go through each instrument, brainstorm words with the class that describe the emotions you feel (ie. does it make you feel happy, scared etc.)
Explain the worksheet that students will be completing back at their tables/desks or in their own space. Each student will need to choose one of the characters in the story and draw a picture of their character, the instrument that represents that character, and describe the emotions that are related to the character.
As students are working on their character worksheet, continue to play the video clip and listen to the song.

Conclusion of lesson
- Gather students back on the mat once they have completed their worksheet
- Ask students to suggest another animal that was not a character in Peter and the Wolf
- What sort of feelings are usually associated with this animal? (ie. is it funny, shy, bubbly, scary)
- What type of music might portray this animal to match its personality. Discuss with the class.
- Finally, how are we all feeling now? Are we happy, tired, bored, excited? What music could represent our feelings now?
